Conflicts in Yemen

The escalation of conflict in Yemen since March 2015 has exacerbated the protection crisis, leaving millions of civilians at risk to their safety and basic rights. Personal safety and food security continue to be among the biggest challenges faced by people, while the infrastructure has been severely damaged.

The poor sanitation system and waterborne diseases, including cholera, have affected hundreds of thousands of people with the disease last year. As a result, there is a crisis in achieving the concepts and commitments of child protection, with an estimated 7.4 million children in urgent need of assistance.

To contribute to alleviating the severity of these crises, we have been able to deliver emergency support, including food aid and other non-food items, to thousands of crisis survivors. We in the organization bear our responsibility towards our people in Yemen and are committed to continuing to support them in mitigating the effects of these crises and alleviating their suffering as much as we can.

Stories of Suffering in Yemen

“I am Um Hajar, that’s how she introduced herself when we asked her to talk to us about the cash assistance project that her family was part of. She first told us about the difficult conditions her country Yemen is going through. ‘I am very sad, but I am also optimistic. I know that this situation we are living now will end someday, and these days will be just memories and stories we tell our children.'”

Her eldest daughter, Hajar, is fifteen years old, and she also has two younger children. She spoke with great sadness about how her children had to leave their education because their school was destroyed in the war.

However, her greatest fear was cholera. “Thank God my children have been saved from cholera until this moment, but I am not sure what might happen in the future; the danger is still present.”

Her younger children, Hassan and Laila, suffered from malnutrition and lost a lot of weight, and their symptoms were extremely worrying. Then came the day when we received assistance from the organization; we received food aid and cash assistance as well.

We received cash assistance throughout the year, and only then did the health of my children truly improve, and they overcame malnutrition and anemia. We were really frustrated and scared, and now we have hope.

“Thank you for everything, for the food, the cash assistance, and the hope.”
